Who can enter what?

Dance with a Stranger Section

1. All Comers Lucky Dip :- This is a general freestyle and lottery type of competition and therefore is open to any dancer of any standard. Couples will consist of 1 male to 1 female.

2. Intermediate Lucky Dip :- This is a general freestyle and lottery type of competition and only open to any dancer of an Intermediate standard.  Modern Jive teachers, professional dancers or anyone who has competed at a level higher than Intermediate in any modern jive competition may not enter this section.
Couples will consist of 1 male to 1 female.

3. Seniors Lucky Dip :- This is a general freestyle and lottery type of competition and only open to any dancer over the age of 50.  Modern Jive teachers and professional dancers may not enter this section.  Couples will consist of 1 male to 1 female.

4. Advanced and Open Lucky Dip :- This is a general freestyle and lottery type of competition and open to any dancer of an advanced level or higher.  Modern Jive teachers, professional dancers or anyone who has competed at an equivalent  level may enter this section.  Couples will consist of 1 male to 1 female.

Showcases

1. The Individual Showcase:-   The Showcase category is open to anybody and gives you the opportunity to dance to your own original choreographed routine to a piece of music chosen by you.  As this is a Showcase only 10% of the dancing needs to be recognisable as modern jive and airsteps are permitted. This category is open to all.  

Your Showcase routine must be a minimum of 3 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes. Points will be deducted for any performance running over this allotted time. Your time will start as soon as your CD starts playing. If you need extra time for setting up and clearing the floor after please inform us when sending us your entry

A copy of your music and requirements must be supplied to us no later 14 days before the competition.

2. Team Cabaret:-  The team category is open to anybody and gives you the opportunity to dance as a group to your own original choreographed routine to a piece of music chosen by you. Teams must consist of at least 3 couples of any male/female combination. As this is a Team” Showcase only 25% of the dancing needs to be recognisable as modern jive and airsteps are permitted. This category is open to all.  

Your Showcase routine must be a minimum of 3 minutes and no longer than 5 minutes. Points will be deducted for any performance running over this allotted time. Your time will start as soon as your CD starts playing. If you need extra time for setting up and clearing the floor after please inform us when sending us your entry.

Main Category Section


1. Intermediate Category:-   The Intermediate freestyle category is suitable for any dancer who feels that they have not yet reached an advanced level.  

Modern Jive teachers or professional dancers may not enter this category (Teachers are classed as anyone who is paid or has been paid to teach dance in the last 18 months).  The previous years JiveChamps winner must move up to the next level.
Over a 12 month period - You may still enter the Intermediate category if you have won Intermediates at another competition provided you have not won 3 or more Intermediate titles.

2. Advanced Category:-  The Advanced freestyle category is suitable for any dancer who feels that they have reached an Advanced level.  

To make it fair for the advance dancer, modern Jive teachers or professional dancers may not enter this category.  (Teachers are classed as anyone who is paid or has been paid to teach dance in the last 18 months). The previous years JiveChamps winner must also move up to the next level.  Over a 12 month period - You may still enter the Advance category if you have won Advanced at another competition provided you have not won 3 or more Advanced titles.

3.  The “Masters” :-  This is an open freestyle category in which we invite Teachers, Professionals and anyone who has won a major title to join us.  Aerials are permitted but only 2 major aerials are permitted per round.  
Finalist will also compete in The “Jive Jam” Showcase Final.

4. Dance with a Star…!! (ProAm):-    Dance with a star is our version of the Pro Am category.  Couples will consist of a Star (Pro) and an amateur.  “Stars” are classed as any dance teacher or professional, or anyone who competes regularly at an “Advanced, Open or Masters” level (or equivalent) dancing with a NON-dance professional (the Amateur) who has also never been paid to teach or competed higher than intermediate level.

5. The Junior Seniors:-  The Junior Senior freestyle category is for the 40 - 54 age group.  Please note that  proof of age (in the form of photo ID) may be required on the day.

Modern Jive teachers or professional dancers may not enter this category (Teachers are classed as anyone who is paid or has been paid to teach dance in the last 18 months).

6. Senior category:-  The Senior freestyle category is for the more mature dancer over the age of 55.  Please note that  proof of age (in the form of photo ID) may be required on the day.

Modern Jive teachers or professional dancers may not enter this category (Teachers are classed as anyone who is paid or has been paid to teach dance in the last 18 months).  

Please note (Senior sections):-  If you are a couple that are both over 50 but fall into the area of being split into 2 categories where one of you is above and the other of you is below 55, then we will allow you both to compete together but only in the “Junior Seniors” category, thus making it fair to existing competing couple who have spent time, money and effort in practicing/training, the older senior competitors as well as encouraging new  dancers to the Senior categories.

7. Aerials Category:-  The Aerials category is suitable for any dancer who enjoy the more acrobatic part of modern jive such lifts, jumps and general air steps. There is no minimum or maximum number moves to be completed during the  competition track or length of any given move.

The competition track will be approximately 2 and half minute and the finals will be held earlier in the afternoon.

Please note:- Due to the nature of this physically demanding category the final will held in the afternoon as the competitors will be less tired. Competitors will also compete entirely at their own risk and the competition organisers, it’s officers and agents accept NO responsibility for any injury that may occur during this competition. It is also the responsibility of the individual competitor to warm up /cool down appropriately. This categories open to all.

8. Double Trouble :-  The Double Trouble freestyle category is suitable for any dancer who like to dance with a difference. Trios can consist of any combination as long a definite lead and follow is demonstrated. This category is open to all. Airsteps are also permitted.

9. Here comes the Girls:-  This is a general freestyle competition and open to any dancer of any standard. Couples will consist of 1 female to 1 female. (New)

10. Boys are back it Town:-  This is a general freestyle competition and open to any dancer of any standard. Couples will consist of 1 female to 1 female. (New)

11. Role Reversal:-  This is a freestyle category that has become a Jive Champs tradition, where the lady must take the lead and the man must follow. .!!  Please note that you will be judged on dancing ability alone so please no fancy dress. - This category is open to all.
